In the year 1575 Leiden University was founded as a direct result of Leiden's role in the Dutch Revolt against Spain. The Dutch Revolt was also the beginning of what has since become popularly known as the Dutch Golden Age. The development of the University and the newly independent Netherlands were intertwined. Just like the Netherlands flourished in the 17th century, so did Leiden University.
